Black-and-white portrait of Simone Steenberg
Portrait of Simone Steenberg.

In Simone Steenberg’s photographs, the pose is a shared invention. Drawing on her background in dance and her interest in feminist performance, Steenberg works with her sitters to explore how a gesture takes shape before the camera. A garment can extend the line of the body. A shift in weight can give a still figure the sense that she is about to move. The women in these photographs take part in shaping how they appear, and familiar images of femininity become open to play and revision.

Steenberg uses styling to give the sitter a way to act within the image. An object can redirect attention from the face to a gesture or change the shape the body makes.

A pose develops through the sitter’s relation to the camera and to the space around them. Outdoors, Steenberg can use the lines already present in the landscape to give that gesture a measure.

The height of the camera helps determine how a body occupies a photograph. Steenberg can make the ground a point of contact and give a held pose a sense of effort.

Steenberg varies how much of the face is visible. When a gesture interrupts the gaze, clothing and posture take on more of the work of portraiture.

A landscape brings conditions that change during a sitting. Steenberg works with that movement, allowing marks, surfaces and the position of the body to register a particular interval.

Working with movement changes the decision of when to release the shutter. A gesture can be held for the camera or recorded as it passes through the landscape.
