Portrait of Peter Varga
Portrait of Peter Varga.

Peter Varga works with plaster as a material that can both receive an impression and establish a volume. Drawing on his training in fresco and architectural design, he brings the worked surface away from the wall and into the space of sculpture. Across Mammatus, Penumbra and Hollókő, ridges, hollows and irregular edges make light an active part of the work. In Relief traces this passage from plane to volume, attending to the way a hand-worked material can change the experience of an architectural setting.

Varga’s experience of fresco gives plaster a history within architecture. In these wall works, the material becomes a subject in its own right: thickness, contour and the traces of working establish the image.

Light describes the relief without fixing its appearance. As it moves across the surface, a ridge can become an edge and a hollow can recede, changing the relationship between the work and the wall.

The series allow different degrees of relief to be read together. The continuity lies in Varga’s treatment of the surface as something built, worked and encountered through changing light.
