Black-and-white portrait of Mini Andén in a dark jacket, her hair caught by the wind

Jacques Olivar builds his portraits around the relationship between a sitter and a place. Working on film, he looks for locations with a particular atmosphere and leaves room for the gestures that emerge during a sitting. A glance off-camera or the fall of light along a street can give a single frame the sense of a scene already in progress. This selection revisits Kalkeriet Contemporary’s 2025 exhibition, presented in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach.

Olivar uses light and clothing to give a sitter a place within the composition. Against a spare backdrop, a stance or gesture can carry the scene.

Olivar uses colour to bring a sitter into relation with a place. A colour can recur across the setting and the figure, binding the portrait to the light in which it was made.

Olivar looks for places that have a story before the sitter arrives. The conditions of the location help him establish a scene, leaving a small gesture free to change how it is read.

The position of the camera determines how much of a place comes into the portrait. Olivar can work at the distance of a passerby or bring the viewer into the same confined space as the sitter.
