Figure and Surface brings together six artists whose work explores how the treatment of a surface shapes our perception of the figure. In the photographs, lighting and framing guide the eye and bring certain details into focus. In the hand-knotted works, fibre, pile height and the contours of each piece become part of the composition. The exhibition traces these choices across media, from Linder Sterling’s use of the cut to the ways Jacques Olivar and Clive Arrowsmith make setting and fabric integral to their portraits.

For Helmut Lang, changes in pile height give the hand-knotted surface relief. Silk carries those changes into the light, so the composition can read differently as the viewer shifts position.

Clive Arrowsmith’s background in painting informs his use of light and composition. In his fashion photography, fabric can structure the portrait, giving light a series of surfaces to reveal.

Carsten Höller uses doubling to disturb a form the viewer thinks they know. Bringing two mushroom forms into a single composition makes comparison part of the way the work is seen.

Linder Sterling works through cutting and recombination. Translating that logic into hand-knotting gives the joins a material presence, with wool, silk and changes in pile carrying distinctions once made by a cut.

Sanford Biggers brings distinct figures into a shared textile composition. The process of hand-knotting gives their relationship a single surface while keeping the division between them legible.
