Black-and-white portrait of David Bowie in a striped shirt, Fenton Lake, New Mexico, 1975

Geoff MacCormack made these photographs during the years he travelled and performed with David Bowie. Their friendship and work together put him close to the ordinary rhythms of touring, filming and recording. He used the camera in the intervals those days afforded, making a record of a performer at work and of the time they spent between engagements. This selection revisits MacCormack’s 2025 exhibition at Kalkeriet Contemporary.

MacCormack photographed from inside the routines of a tour. Waiting, travelling and getting ready gave him access to a different pace from the one an audience experienced.

A change of setting could change MacCormack’s distance from his subject. A train carriage brought the camera close, while the open landscape gave him room to place a figure at a distance.

On a film set, MacCormack worked alongside a production with its own costumes, sets and lighting. His photographs draw on those conditions and on his proximity to Bowie.

Working across locations, MacCormack kept his attention on the intervals that recur in any production. The sequence makes those intervals part of the record.

In the recording studio, MacCormack was also a musical collaborator. That double role helps explain the ease with which his photographs move between an individual portrait and a record of work in progress.
