A Scene Takes Shape considers how the edge of a work directs attention towards its setting. A figure in Jacques Olivar’s photographs belongs to a scene that seems to continue beyond the frame. Calle Henzel’s irregular rugs draw new contours across the floor. In Verter Turroni’s moulded forms and Matthew Day Jackson’s looping chair supports, solid volumes and openings give the surrounding space a visible role. Together, the works make the room part of the composition, inviting the viewer to follow a line from the image or object into the space around it.

Henzel treats the perimeter of a rug as part of the composition. Changes in pile height bring that irregular outline into relief, allowing the surface to register light as well as colour.

At Imperfetto Lab, Turroni works with fibreglass for the freedom it gives him to shape a shell. The studio sands and finishes the material by hand, giving each surface a character of its own.
