Kalkeriet Contemporary is pleased to present Anfibio, a chair designed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti in 1970, the Anfibio chair is a cult icon of Italian design. Innovative, functional, and unmistakably original, it has been celebrated by critics worldwide as a “sofa-work of art.”
Alessandro Becchi (Florence, 1946–1987) studied at ISIA in Florence before beginning his career as a designer. In 1971, he created the iconic Anfibio sofa, which was presented the following year at MoMA in New York as part of Italy: The New Domestic Landscape.
His close collaboration with Benito Giovannetti and Giovannetti Collezioni led to a series of transformable sofa designs. Anfibio is held in the permanent collections of 12 contemporary art museums worldwide.
Born in the revolutionary 1960s, Giovannetti became part of the history of Made in Italy furniture with its iconic and timeless design. From the very beginning, experimenting and surprising became Benito Giovannetti’s calling, as he launched the first productions in collaboration with the great masters of Italian design.
