Nine.5 is a limited edition series of collectible design developed by New York–based architect and designer Suchi Reddy in collaboration with Ekaya Banaras, the century-old Banarasi textile atelier in New Delhi. The collection emerged from a five-year dialogue between Reddy, Palak Shah, and Melanie Courbet, bringing together contemporary design research and generational craftsmanship.
The title refers to the nine-and-a-half yards of a traditional saree. The silhouettes echo the draped movement of fabric around the body, translated into sculptural wood forms upholstered in custom silk textiles. Reddy developed the fabrics specifically for the series, drawing conceptual reference from the mathematical zero—first formalized in 628 by the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta. The motif becomes both symbol and structure: void as origin, absence as form. Each piece is produced by SFA Works and upholstered in hand-woven Banarasi silks crafted by Ekaya’s master artisans. The interplay between wood structure and textile surface creates a tension between geometry and fluidity — between architectural precision and tactile softness.
The collection ranges from seating and tables to lighting and a smaller sculptural counterweight object (.5), conceived as both functional element and autonomous form. Every edition reflects the irregularities inherent in hand-weaving, making each example subtly distinct. Nine.5 received the 2025 NYCxDESIGN Award in the Residential Lounge Collection category.
Suchi Reddy is a New York–based architect and founder of Reddymade (est. 2002), a cross-disciplinary practice working across architecture, interiors, and public art. Her work is grounded in research on the emotional and psychological impact of space, guided by her principle that form should follow feeling. Born in Chennai, India, her approach bridges cultural heritage, material exploration, and sensory design.
Ekaya Banaras is a New Delhi–based textile atelier rooted in four generations of Banarasi master-weaving. Led by Bharat Shah and Palak Shah, the studio preserves centuries-old handloom techniques while advancing them through contemporary collaborations. Working with a network of over 10,000 master weavers, Ekaya sustains the cultural and technical legacy of Banaras while expanding its relevance within global design.
