RICHARD PRINCE, Untitled (Cowboy), 2016
Exhibition poster
84.1 × 59.4 cm (33.1 × 23.4 in)
Unframed
Kalkeriet is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a poster featuring 'Untitled (Cowboy)' (2016) by American artist Richard Prince (b. 1949). This work was shown at Louisiana from November 2022 as part of the exhibition Same Man, in the series Louisiana on Paper.
Prince is a leading figure of the USA’s so-called Picture Generation. He is known for rephotographing glossy magazine advertisements featuring sofas, photo models, biker girls—or the archetypal American man, famously shaped by Marlboro cigarette ads. Here, Prince’s closely cropped images, often held together with tape, invite new interpretations.
In the late 1970s, when artists like Prince resisted traditional painting (though he returned to it later), photography and works on paper became vital means of expression. Prince’s breakthrough in New York around 1980 came through his now-iconic rephotographs.
Using his own camera, Prince “stole” existing images, twisted them, and opened them to fresh meanings and the many desires they conceal—including his own. He emphasizes the nonfictional undercurrent of his art, aiming to reproduce reality and explore its layers, often through rephotographing consumer advertising.
Prince doesn’t ask questions—he seeks answers. His work revolves around identity, making his visual world a portrait of the late 20th century’s search for self: Who are you? Who am I?
