RICHARD PRINCE, Untitled (Person), 2014
Exhibition poster
29.7 × 42 cm (11.7 × 16.5 in)
Unframed
Kalkeriet is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a poster featuring 'Untitled (Person)' (2014) by American artist Richard Prince, shown at Louisiana from November 2022 in the exhibition Same Man, part of the series Louisiana on Paper.
One of America’s most influential post-1980 artists, Prince is renowned for his twisted re-photographs of glossy magazine ads, his cross-outs, cross-hatches, annotations, and spray-painted versions of magazine covers, books, and comic drawings—alongside his collages, which here clearly nod to Picasso’s portraits of women.
In fact, Prince turns everything into collage—subtracting and adding. Picasso is a hero to Prince, and in this work, he cuts holes in a photograph to fill the gaps with his own generic versions of Picasso’s female portraits, creating an entirely new narrative.
This is not a new style but rather Prince’s evolving approach. Throughout his career, he has commented, crossed out, spray-painted, re-photographed, cut out, and pasted in. Prince remains an ambiguous figure whose style constantly varies.
At the core of all Richard Prince’s work is the question of human identity—typical of the late 20th century: Who are you? Who am I? Who is he himself?
