PETER VARGA, Rorschach 03, 2025
Unique
Archaic fine plasters on solid birch cradle
H 137 x W 91 x D 5 cm
(H 54 x W 36 x D 2 in)
As a young student in Hungary, Varga was once reprimanded for drawing in class — an encounter that unexpectedly led him to a master fresco painter who became his mentor. He later worked in the traditional Roman fresco method across churches, theaters, and historic buildings throughout Europe, including projects at the Vatican. Formally trained in carpentry, Varga went on to study furniture design and architecture, earning a Master’s in Architectural Design from the University of Sopron. During this period, his experimentation with plaster evolved into a broader exploration of the material as both a structural and expressive medium.
Today, Varga’s practice spans freestanding contemporary works and immersive architectural installations. Rooted in European craft traditions and shaped by a contemporary architectural sensibility, his work blurs the boundary between object and environment. He is based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and creates site-specific installations across the US and internationally.
