DAVID HOCKNEY, Pool and Steps, 1971
Exhibition poster

Unframed – glossy surface
Kalkeriet is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a poster featuring 'Pool and Steps' (1971) by British artist David Hockney (b. 1937), one of the most influential figures in British art and a defining presence in the 1960s London pop art scene.
Hockney is a familiar and much-loved name at Louisiana, where he has exhibited several times. His work resonates with audiences for its ability to find quiet wonder in the ordinary—the moments that shape everyday life. Often, he leaves space within the scene, inviting the viewer to step in and interpret the image on their own terms.
Pool and Steps belongs to a period that began in 1964, when a 27-year-old Hockney left Britain for the sun-drenched light of California. There, he produced a series of iconic pool paintings, exploring the interplay of light, water, and architecture. These works, often rendered in soft pastel tones of pink, turquoise, and green, have become emblematic of his artistic voice.
In 2007, Louisiana acquired Hockney’s monumental 'A Closer Grand Canyon' (1998), a panoramic painting composed of 60 canvases—a key work in the museum’s collection.
Now based in Normandy, Hockney continues to create with boundless curiosity, experimenting with new media and capturing his surroundings with fluid lines and vibrant color.
