Kalkeriet Contemporary is pleased to present photographer Jacques Olivar. Born in Casablanca, Olivar emerged in the 1980s as a distinctive voice in European photography, gaining recognition for his cinematic visual language and narrative approach. His career led to collaborations with publications including British Vogue, Uomo Vogue, Vogue Homme International, and Marie-Claire, as well as fashion houses such as Giorgio Armani, Hermès, Comme des Garçons, and Givenchy.
Working exclusively with analogue film, Olivar developed a photographic language informed by mid-century cinema and Technicolor. His images often depict deserts, small towns, and roadside landscapes where atmosphere, light, and gesture evoke quiet narratives. Influenced by the films of John Ford, John Huston, and Elia Kazan, his work conveys solitude, scale, and psychological depth.
Exploring themes of independence and transition, Olivar creates photographs that resemble stills from an unwritten film. His work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2001) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2008), affirming its place within contemporary art. Now based in Barcelona, Olivar continues to oversee the production and exhibition of his fine art photographs for galleries and collectors internationally.
